The importance of knowledge as a strategic resource is well realized in the corporate world. The educational markets are becoming global as universities adopt international curriculum, invite students from diverse backgrounds to enrol in their programs, and design the educational experience in a way that maximizes international exposure. This paper reviews the need for adopting knowledge management practices in the education sector, and elaborates on the knowledge creation process before suggesting a framework for implementation, and technological trends adopted by educational institutions worldwide. There is a variety of technologies and tools available today to capture, organize, and provide access to knowledge. Seamless resource access for instance, is possible with technology as students refer to online journals and publications on a smart device, then pick up on where they left off on another device. Technology brands like Apple iCloud, Google Drive and Amazon Kindle have enabled cloud services on their devices, which produce a seamless filing system. Augmented Reality (AR) is a fairly recent learning technology used to train students in a learning environment for medicine and manufacturing-focused skill sets. Students partake in simulations of real-life scenarios and receive sufficient training while also being prepared for mishaps and disasters. In terms of technological evolution, knowledge management systems are moving from basic search and retrieval systems to sophisticated artificial intelligence-based technology that can be customized for individual user needs and preferences.
